Sillinsel, Innsbruck (AT)

The ‘Sillinsel’, an artificially created island, lies in the river between downtown, Dreiheiligen and Pradl. The design proposal suggests playfully interspersed urban building blocks to restructure the island. The loosely positioned buildings are oriented following the island’s topography, the view connections amongst each other and the optimal lighting of the residential units.
All new-build solitaires provide short distances to the infrastructure hubs. The northern tip of the island is publicly accessible, an urban habitat via the newly created Sillpromenade in the east of the headland. Bridges over the Sill Canal connect the island to public transport junctions. Motorised private transport is deliberately unbundled from the island’s development concept.
The Sillspitzpark is part of the city’s green lungs. An extensive gravel ground connects the playground to the south and forms a unique recreational area surrounded by water. The buildings are aligned so that each housing unit is guaranteed an unrestricted view of the landscape. At the same time, the switchable two to four-room apartments guarantee optimal orientation and a high degree of natural lighting.
