Studentenheim, Halle (DE)

Founded in 1502, Martin Luther University is one of the most important universities in Germany with over 20,000 students. Within walking distance, close to the old town, we are building two student residences in ARGE with Aline Hielscher. The central task is to develop an optimum number of living spaces on the plots.

We are creating a complex with approx. 130 flats and an underground car park; opposite, Hielscher’s office is planning a smaller project with approx. 30 units. Our design consists of a street-facing head building, a connecting wing and a large rear block in the inner courtyard.

The grid of the timber post-and-beam façade is based on the basic dimensions of the flat modules, so the internal structure of the building can be read from the outside. Spacious arcades in the inner courtyard provide access to all the flats. A network of bridges and walkways unites the individual parts of the building, ensures good orientation and serves as a communicative area for residents to meet. An external main staircase between the head building and the side wing connects the arcades of the residential floors.

We designed the student flats as a reinforced concrete construction with a modular wooden façade in front. The arcade consists of precast concrete elements resting on filigree steel supports. The exciting contrast between cool concrete and warm wood creates a modern, homely atmosphere.
