Am Papierbach Quarter, Landsberg (DE)
A new residential quarter is being built on the site of the former plough factory in Landsberg am Lech. With an area of 5.7 ha, the industrial wasteland near the centre is one of the most important inner-city development areas in Landsberg. In addition to residential and mixed use, childcare facilities with open spaces and a local provider, the need for cultural purposes is also to be met.
Our design is based on the 2016 master plan: the L-shaped edge, accentuated by two high points, protects the green interior of the block from the railway noise in the east and forms the face in the direction of the Lech arch. In contrast to the hard edge stands the porous interior – two point houses and the opening into the green space at the Papierbach in the south.
In the sense of neighbourly living, the block is regarded as a social unit. The slightly elevated garden plinth clarifies the transition from the public road space into the neighbourhood. The ground floor common room lines the covered entrance into the interior of the block. The garden offers private green for the apartments on the ground floor and common areas for all residents. All staircases are on the façade and are naturally lit. The point houses are accessed via the garden.
The stairwells of the peripheral buildings each provide access to two push-through apartments and one or two smaller apartments with orientation on one side. The point houses can accommodate two to three apartments per floor. All apartments are open, bright and spacious. Development areas are reduced to a minimum. Large balconies and terraces create pleasant outdoor living areas.
The building volume is kept compact with its lightly muddy brick facade. Attached flasks with smooth plaster surfaces create a lively interplay of offset elements with finely nuanced colour and surface gradations. Each balcony is equipped with a fixed plant element. The railings are lightly ornamented and contrast with the simplicity of the building.
