Construction sports high school and extension HTL Dornbirn

In the midst of a spacious park and surrounded by single-family homes, lies the building conglomerate of the HTL Dornbirn. BIG would like to build a high school for competitive sports on the site, which together with the planned extension of the HTL forms a harmonious ensemble. We have positioned the 4-storey new building as a free-standing structure, with the narrow side facing Höchsterstraße. This setting creates a common school forecourt with a clear entrance situation and links the existing building with the street space.

Simple orientation, clear organisation and functional processes were the main focus when drawing up the floor plans. The two-hip complex is connected by an open access core, flooded with light through air spaces and skylight glazing. The ground floor houses a library, buffet and break room on the north-west side as well as a multi-purpose room, which can be accessed externally and therefore also used for extracurricular activities. The administration is located in the southeast. The 1st floor contains the premises of the HTL as well as the natural sciences area. The two floors above house the teaching and learning zones of the sports high school as well as the computer and art education areas. In the light-flooded middle zone, a covered terrace opens up and offers space for communicative exchange and free, open learning. The outdoor sports facilities in the north-western part of the area are framed by beautiful old trees.

The massive construction as a skeleton structure with stiffening wall panels not only saves costs, but also enables a spatially open structure with a generous construction grid. The double-shell façade is made of reinforced concrete on the inside. On the ground floor, the outer shell is constructed in fair-faced concrete and above it as a pre-walled clinker brick façade. All glazing is equipped with external shading.
