Music School and Library, Wolfurt (AT)

Following the master plan, two intertwined irregular cuboids occupy the site, without having to sacrifice the precious, space defining large tree. The result is a truly pleasant and appropriate prelude to the two important community functions with an independent identity and “village-like” qualities.
The open space counterpart in the south forms a protected, intimate outdoor area for the library creating a highly inviting place and offering a variety of views and insights. The music school in the upper three stories is easily accessible thanks to the chosen layout, without foregoing spatial tension and responding to the beautiful surroundings. The two large halls on the top floor are positioned to provide identification.
Two angular rammed earth walls define the overall figure, structured and reinforced with horizontal ascending mortar joints. In between, a timber construction made of cross-glued panels has been installed. A clay sculpture with informal lounges forms the “intersection” in the center. The largely glazed, collapsed façade parts have a sturdy skin made of solid vertical oak planks, the three-layer crossed light filters in the middle floors are also made of solid oak.
