Wolfganghof Süd, St. Gallen (CH)

The popular Wolfganghof residential quarter in St. Gallen-Haggen continues to grow. The St. Gallen pension fund has commissioned us to build five new apartment buildings with 137 rental flats. In order to be affordable for couples and singles, young and old, the majority of the flats have 2.5 and 3.5 rooms. This means that the units are significantly smaller than those in the existing housing estate, 70 percent of which have 4.5 to 6 rooms. Older residents can thus move into smaller units within the neighbourhood and the large flats become available for families.

The existing Wolfganghof housing estate was built in several stages starting in 1982. With the new buildings, we continue the characteristic structure of the elongated and angled brick houses. Thus, the five new three- to four-storey houses blend harmoniously into the surroundings and the settlement continues to be perceived as an ensemble. The larger, point-shaped building near the bus turning area also offers space for commercial units, community rooms and coworking areas. The new buildings are of course barrier-free, in contrast to the existing buildings, most of which do not have lifts. Access by car is exclusively via the underground car park and ensures that the surrounding area remains car-free and quiet.

Photovoltaic systems on the roofs generate solar electricity, which is passed on to the tenants at preferential rates. A double-shell masonry construction with a brick façade ensures durability, maximum building insulation and thus energy efficiency. In addition, the houses will be connected to the district heating supply of the city of St. Gallen. The project will be certified according to SNBS (Standard Sustainable Building Switzerland).
