House S, Egg (AT)

This longitudinal building stands tall in the central location of a former pasture. The gable roof and the timber façade are a homage to regional traditions. The sheltered outdoor area, recessed to a loggia corresponds to the historical form of a Schopf (porch). However, the straight cutouts, openings and the ribbon glazing, partly covered by the timber façade, affirm the modern style of the building. The façade is clad with silver fir.
The construction comprises timber frame components set on top of a solid concrete foundation. Three panes of exposed concrete form the structural framework and allow the façade to perform independently. The interior design supports this concept. Sliding walls for separation and screening accommodate flexible uses. Ceilings and walls clad in wooden panels reinterpret the character of an old living room. Openings on the narrow side of the building guide the views from inside, framing the surrounding landscape. The longitudinal glass facades represent a continuous theme, regardless of the use. Thus, also utility rooms are given a special quality.
This building sensitively combines old and new construction methods and successfully merges old and new qualities. Materials and forms are rooted in old traditions, while the pragmatic implementation and reinterpretation of old structures exemplifies modern contemporary architecture. In 1999, this was honored with the timber construction award.
