House F, Bezau (AT)

House F is a distinguished example of a contemporary typology. The meticulously designed external form is the result of clever openings and recesses. The common form is constituted by the graying wood texture of a familiar pitched roof. Alternating laths and veneered slabs made from untreated silver fir further differentiate the outer skin and the cut surfaces of the “wooden monolith”. The building is not only aligned towards the sun and a perfect view, but also towards the flank of a mighty, old Bregenzerwälderhaus.
Right at the bottom, on the hillside floor, the terrace of the optional accessory apartment is integrated into the building. From the timber construction on the floor above, the entrance and integrated garage open into a partly glazed corner recess on the street side. On the upper residential floor, a second deep recess runs along the sun facing longitudinal side. A rhythmical band of fixed glazed panels and opening wings forms two additional terraces. Inside, two L-blocks constitute an elaborate room sequence of dining area, living room and library. Even the most detailed functional irregularities, such as handles or roller shutters, are consistently integrated into a clear-cut overall form of uniform walnut surfaces and white lightweight elements.
