Citadelle Dock-1, ZAC Deux-Rives, Strasbourg (FR)

The Deux-Rives project is the largest development project in Strasbourg since the Neustadt was built between 1871 and 1918. Aim is to redesign the Strasbourg-Kehl axis and to realise a transnational two-shore metropolis. The Dock-1 construction site on the Rhine Canal (Petit Rhin) marks the prelude of the redesign of the “Citadelle” harbour district. Visible from the Parc de la Citadelle to the Vauban Bridge, our project perfectly fits into the urban context and shapes its identity as an “eco-quarter”. Situated between the two harbour basins, Citadelle Dock-1 is an atmospheric place with a strong identity and a direct connection to the city and the water – the best conditions for a high quality of living and a new form of urbanity.

The mixed-use project with 83 flats on top of a multi-storey car park interweaves different functions and creates a communicative place around mobility-related spaces (car and bicycle parking plus associated services, shops, etc.). The powerful large form makes a strong gesture towards both sides. A five-storey parking garage is stretched between two cross-shaped, elegantly balancing residential towers, above which are further flats with communal, spacious terraces on both long sides. All residents benefit from the outstanding views of the city, the river, the Vosges and the Black Forest.

The heart of the project is a high hall on the ground floor, designed as a pedestrian gallery, which allows for a variety of uses (market, cultural and sporting events, space between inside and outside, etc.).
The flexible space programme can adapt to changing uses at any time. Sustainable materials such as wood and brick, communal terraces on the car park and loggias with attractive views, as well as a variety of meeting opportunities create a liveable environment for all users.
