Residential courtyard Zukunft Nord, Karlsruhe (DE)

On the former military site in the north of the city of Karlsruhe, the “Zukunft Nord” project is creating a new, mixed-use district. New ways of living and working characterise this socially and ecologically forward-looking district and its architecture. In terms of urban development, our design for a residential courtyard with a day-care centre is strongly concerned with the quality creating themes of “neighbourhood”, “neighbourhood” and “house community”. In a flexible, lively structure, we have developed a variety of house types that enclose a green open space as a communal courtyard.
This courtyard forms the heart of the design and provides access to the main part of the flats. It is raised half a metre to street level to provide the flats with the necessary privacy from the street. Each courtyard entrance features a “house tree” and a theme (e.g. a crested pool). Varied spaces invite residents and visitors to linger and meet.
Low-threshold offers promote internal and external communication, they bring people together and stimulate the formation of a stable social network – the basis for a liveable coexistence in the city. We have therefore programmed the ground floors facing the city with public uses, such as the multi-purpose room, the kindergarten, a florist, co-working spaces and small offices.

Four buildings, one community
The four buildings form a neighbourhood, but are distinguished by their individual house communities. The diversity of the neighbourhood is emphasised by the façade structures and colour scheme of the houses. The colour concept is based on the typical local red and yellow sandstone combined with greenish nuances of the pre-greyed wooden slats. Distinctive structures in front of the courtyard serve as climbing aids for greening the façade and for hanging balconies.
