University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences, Vienna (AT)
The design takes up the urban fabric of the surroundings and develops a clear, precise structure surrounded by high-quality outdoor spaces. The use of resources is appropriate and responsible – a compact body, an adequate materialization, optimal use of renewable energies and natural lighting and a conclusive greening concept. The greened entrance side with a folded PV glass façade gives the new building a unique identity. The cross-functional core is a central, light-flooded six-story air space, structured by wide learning bridges and a planted wall, crowned by an elegant, tensioned ETFE foil roof with high UV light transmission.
The Audimax and the exhibition areas in the basement are accessed via a sculptural, wide curved staircase and are lit from above. The ground floor as a distributor and meeting point accommodates the multifunctional lobby and the multi-purpose Tüwi, a cultural pub. The workplaces of the institutes and the ÖH are located on the upper floors. The canteen as a generous, flowing sequence of rooms with a gallery occupies the garden wing and is oriented to the exterior on both sides. An attractive roof terrace extends over the entire area. A wide cantilevered, greened pergola shades the cozy, communicative garden.
