Ronacher Theater, Vienna (AT)
The established Ronacher theater in Vienna will be converted and expanded into a modern, multifunctional theater and event company. The protection of historical monuments restricted the new volume to the contours of the former Stadttheater and asked for the necessary extension of cubatures within these limits. The additional volume should be clearly visible as a contemporary, new structural intervention enriching and enhancing the existing building.
Matt white printed glass forms the cladding of the roof structure. New motifs were developed in response to the history of the building and its intended use. The bevelled corner element acts as a projection screen with a long-distance effect up to Kärntnerstrasse. The clear glass areas reflect the sky. The white color reacts to changing light conditions. Different moods are created in the evening. The closed parts are illuminated from outside and reflect the night sky, the open parts are brightly backlit underlining and highlighting the motifs. The result is a very harmonious, independent and lively, almost illusionistic but also restrained appearance – appropriate to the task in terms of content and expression.
