Siemensstadt 2.0, Berlin

The central task in the competition for Siemensstadt 2.0 was to create a coherent overall urban development concept for the 70-hectare, partially listed industrial area in the west of Berlin. The aim was to develop a future-proof quarter that meets high standards of architectural quality, ecological sustainability and economic efficiency. The closed industrial area is to become a lively district with research and production facilities, 2750 apartments, a hotel, shops, restaurants and cafés, schools and kindergartens as well as spacious leisure areas.

Our urban development guidelines

  • A new identity-giving center at the intersection of Rohrdamm and Nonnendammallee
  • Maximum networking of home and workplace, development and production, urbanity and nature
  • Innovation Boulevard as new backbone and communicative hotspot. Flowing transitions of the various ground floor uses: from the hotel lobby to the research center’s education and exhibition area, to the restaurants and shops below the attached administration area and the historical parts of the building
  • Schaltwerk Halle in the center of the innovation cluster. Completely gutted, the interior offers maximum flexibility in programming. The newly built offices float detached above the hall. The Schaltwerk high-rise with its spacious, loft-like working environments also docks onto the hall. The upper, recessed floors are glazed as a crown and form the new visitor centre for urban development.
  • Spacious promenade with cafés, restaurants and shops west of the hall as an interface between working and living. All ground floor zones are designed as “public city floors”. The arrangement of the buildings in open blocks offers quiet retreats for residential uses.
  • Education campus in the central park. It has been deliberately removed from the dense and dynamic core of the innovation cluster in order to provide the students with peace and quiet, a sense of security and a connection to the greenery. Various forms of education are arranged around the central courtyard.
  • Garden City 2.0 at Paulsternstraße. Green courtyards with recreational and play areas close to the apartments and tenants’ gardens inside the block as well as community gardens create meeting places for the socially and age-mixed residents (about 300 people per block). The plaza and the main street with cafés and shops offer urban life and invite to stay. As a flexible hybrid, the Haus des Handwerks integrates living, hotel, working, production and parking.

Innovation and social inclusion

Housing is concentrated in three areas of the site. Various forms of use and housing, building types and structural densities are integrated. The typological diversity of its building structure and the mixed ownership of rented apartments, condominiums and building groups ensures the desirable social diversity of its residents. Families and singles, children, young and old, locals and newcomers live here.

Smart construction

The production of Siemensstadt 2.0 closes the gap between planning and realization. Integral models go through a highly efficient process from design to joining on the site. Wood is used as the material that brings the high precision from the digital BIM model directly to the construction site. The CNC milling machine is controlled straight from the model. In this way we close the gap between a modern, digital planning model and a high-tech implementation on the construction site. The result is time-saving, error-avoiding and highly precise.

People-oriented traffic concept

The vision for the new Siemensstadt Campus is a people-oriented, lively urban environment. Therefore, motorized individual traffic will be minimized. The parking facilities provided for in the master plan and more than half of the current parking spaces along Nonnendammallee will be eliminated and concentrated in peripheral car parks. This will provide room for pedestrians and cyclists who will activate the public space. The transport system of the new quarter links up with the existing public transport network. A fixed e-bus route and several stations with e-bikes and e-scooters are available for internal circulation. A shuttle brings all users to all locations within the site at any time of day.
