Martial Arts Center, Verquin (FR)
The Verquin Martial Arts Centre provides residents of the Hauts-de-Marne region with a new facility, acting both as a symbol of identity and a convivial space. Constructed on a triangular plot, it is a perfect fit for the site and demonstrates close attention to the specific features of the area. The gently curving circular roof overhangs the building and drops down towards the ground. It echoes the characteristic shape of the slagheaps dotted around the mining landscape of the North, and the color of the bitumen coating strengthens the connection further.
A spectacular roof framework, made of glued laminated timber beams forming diamond shapes up above, crowns the large combat room at the heart of the building. At its center, a circular skylight allows day light to flood in. Parts of the skylight can be opened to provide natural ventilation and extraction. It is completed with triangular windows above the stands with a capacity for 2,500 spectators, the clubhouse and the reception. All the additional facilities are arranged underneath the stands to give the central focus to the main room.
