Europaallee Baufeld H, Zürich (CH)

The areas on both sides of the tracks of Zurich main station are of central importance for the urban development. The requirements for the urban development concept were high social and ecological quality, identity, functionality, sustainable benefit and expansion in stages. In 2009, SBB announced the competition for the site H on the western edge of the Europaallee. The quality of the location asks for an outstanding project in terms of urban development, architecture and energy efficiency. The concept of Dietrich | Untertrifaller | Stäheli offers good conditions for residents to live together and for users to interact with the city centre and the surrounding districts. Service, shopping and work offers in the building site increase the relation to the neighbourhood and ensure short distances in everyday life. Building site H is connected in many ways with the surrounding districts and the city centre – but it is also a place of retreat at this very emission-rich, polluted site.
The lively ensemble consists of four structures of different cubature with a connecting base. The hotel high-rise dominates the complex and forms the prelude for the entire area of Europaallee. The hotel entrance is located at the spacious forecourt, which is animated by a varied gastronomic offer. Above the hotel, levels are several residential floors with attractive views. The two elongated buildings on Lagerstrasse house apartments and office space for variable use. An attractive, two-storey auditorium stretches as an independent building between the four buildings and houses numerous shops and restaurants.
