Collège, Landerneau (FR)

Nestled in the rapidly changing Voas Glaz neighbourhood in Landerneau, the Collège will be a hub for the future development of the area. We see the new college as a bridge between urban, inclusive, open and sustainable. School is not only a place of teaching; school is above all a place of learning and togetherness. Teachers, students and staff spend a large part of their day here. We therefore attach great importance to thinking about and realising these new spaces as generous, open and stimulating places.
The simple volumetry unfolds on three sides and provides urban continuity. The elongated façade opens up to the large forecourt in the west. In order to establish a dialogue with the small-scale built environment, we have kept our building two storeys low. We pay special attention to school inclusion. In terms of flooring, lighting, sound insulation, signage and sensory requirements, the premises are designed so that all pupils can attend the school regardless of the nature of their disability.

An open main courtyard and a sheltered side courtyard
From the school’s entrance hall, there is an unobstructed view of the spacious main courtyard, where two large trees serve as eye-catchers. The Collège de Landerneau follows an inclusive approach. The room design takes into account the different needs of the pupils and, with a small, quiet side courtyard away from the traffic routes, offers autistic children in particular a safe setting. A teaching garden enables the development of all senses. In the main courtyard, playful furniture for relaxation is arranged in a cocoon-like manner under a pergola, complemented by a platform made of wood and plants. The space between the sports course of the Allée des Prés verts and the main courtyard is dedicated to the City Stadium. The stadium can be freely accessible or used as a closed school area, depending on requirements.

Internal organisation on two levels
Wide circulation routes are arranged around the large break yard, connecting the school life areas, the administration offices, the health centre, the library, the foyer, the music and art classes and the cafeteria. The first floor is dedicated to teaching. 13 classrooms are arranged around the central courtyard, which open onto a glazed corridor that extends to an outdoor terrace. This arrangement allows for a place of meeting and informal teaching at the heart of the new school. Each classroom is optimally supplied with daylight through large windows in the façade and the shed roof.

Ambitious environmental targets
The Conseil Départemental du Finistère has set a very ambitious environmental target of E4C1 for this project. The E4 level requires that all of the building’s energy consumption be generated on site by renewable energy. We chose a timber building with a post-and-beam construction made of glulam panels, which allows for flexible spaces and a low carbon footprint. The high-performance and sustainable building envelope consists of Eternit panels for the pitched roofs, a green roof terrace above the cafeteria and wooden shingles for the façade.
