Campus Schendlingen, Bregenz (AT)

The existing primary school will be replaced by a new Mittelschule with full-day supervision for a maximum of 600 pupils between 6 and 14 years. It is organized in eight independent ‘small schools’, each with three classes connected by a common room and the necessary workrooms for teachers. Each of these clusters has their own wardrobes and washrooms.
The special feature of our design is the integrated break hall, from which both the individual clusters and the special classes can be accessed. The public and spacious ground floor is a contrast in scale to the upper floor and the intimate and compactly organized learning area in timber construction.
The large schoolyard is bordered by a part of the building with semi-public use, which is widened around a ‘flying’ roof to the sports field upgrading this place. The sheltered roof also provides access and stands. This transition from inside to outside is repeated in the green courtyard, but here the shed roof is only designed as a cantilever. Only the gymnasium, which will be directly connected to the school, remains from the existing building.
