Mountain Restaurant Grüneck, Tschagguns

The new construction of the Grüneck mountain restaurant in Tschagguns faces the tension between a tolerable, restrained intervention in the characteristic landscape and the economic requirements of the leisure industry. The polygonal cubature of our design with the extensively greened gable roof blends harmoniously into the mountain panorama. The slight overhang makes the compact volume appear to float above the slope, thus setting a memorable accent.
“The exemption of the top station with the logical, structural extension will in future allow a clear legibility of the location with a high-quality view of the Montafon mountain world,” praised the jury and awarded our proposal second place.

To make arriving on the mountain an experience, a covered staircase leads directly to the spacious panorama terrace on level 1, serving as a central point of contact and allowing visitors to find their way around intuitively. The adjoining self-service restaurant is oriented towards the valley with generous glazing. Due to the central position of the kitchen on this level, all restaurant areas can be served from here.
The spacious restaurant on the second level opens to the south towards the impressive mountain panorama. Just behind it is the children’s restaurant. The ground floor houses the sanitary facilities, staff rooms and the self-catering room with a view of the valley and direct access from the ski slope.

Domestic, untreated wood for construction, facades and interior fittings sets an example for sustainable, climate-friendly building. The earth contacting parts of the ground and first floors, partly built into the slope, are constructed of in-situ concrete. The rear-ventilated façade consists of split, native larch shingles.
Wood is also the dominant material for the interior fittings. Untreated, native silver fir for walls and furniture as well as rough sawn oak planks for the floor create a comfortable room climate. This focus on wood underlines our ecological, future-oriented approach and the premises of the Golm ski resort, the first climate-neutral ski area in Austria.
