House S, Schaffhausen
The client searched a long time for the right property in a peripheral district of Schaffhausen. The plot pertains to a district development plan which has been partly realized. House S was built on one of the last remaining parcels.
The design sought to marry the different qualities of the immediate (forest) and distant surroundings (lake ridge). The house is located on a small hill-side access road which terminates at a square anchored by an old linden tree.
The house is accessed on the bedroom level via a roofed-over forecourt. The top floor boasts views and terraces in both directions, a wide ribbon glazing with a view of the Seerhein and due to the shape of the roof tall glazing elements that encompass the entire room, bringing the steep edge of the woods to the west into the building.
The entire house, except for the basement walls, is made from large pre-fabricated timber components. All interior surfaces on the top floor and the west façade are finished in domestic solid silver fir, while the ground floor is clad in white and the floor constructed from white wood components.
